PSH participate in study tour on SRHR in Brazil and attend the second Seminar of BRICS at the Minist
IPPF has been working with colleagues in Brazil and the National Population Unit to develop a study tour on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Brazil in February 2015 and invited PSH to participate in the study tour and to attend the second Seminar of BRICS Officials and Experts on Population and Development at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brasilia.
The objectives of the study tour were to:
Enable participants to see programmes working with communities on SRHR / population, development and gender issues in two different cities in Brazil, including the chance to talk to staff and clients / participants.
To meet and talk to decision-makers about SRHR / population, development and gender issues in Brazil including the achievements, successes and challenges they face, for example on devolution of responsibilities around SRHR to local authorities
To understand the Brazilian context and develop ideas to try out in South Africa through briefings, question and answer sessions, and discussions with speakers and among the study tour group.
Following the study tour participants attended the second Seminar of BRICS Officials and Experts on Population and Development at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brasilia. This provided an opportunity to consolidate their understanding of the Brazilian context and compare and contrast the experiences of South Africa and Brazil with those of India, China and Russia. Listening to the debates and talking to the official delegates and civil society observers from the other countries provided opportunities to share what participants have seen on the study tour and test out ideas for application in South Africa.
